Over the years I've officiated many weddings where the couple has included a beloved pet in the ceremony. Often times this has been a dog that acted as the ring bearer. Of course, as with children, pets can add a somewhat whimsical and unpredictable element to a wedding. But, don't be afraid to let your pet participate if you wish... just save some wedding cake for him (or her)... unless of course, the pet is a fish. The cake could get a little soggy.

Some tips if you include your Dog or Cat
(or other pet) in your Ceremony:

Never tie your real wedding rings to a pet's collar unless you will have your pet on a leash before, during and after the wedding.  I once officiated a wedding where the puppy was spooked by a car backfiring and ran off.  We spent the better part of an hour seaching the neighborhood for the dog... and $20,000 worth of wedding rings.

On a hot day, always have shade and sufficient water for your pet.

If your pet is a "climber" and likes to jump up on people, remember that your guests may be wearing their nicest clothes on that day and it would be best that you keep your pet on a leash to prevent this.

Please have your dog shampooed and groomed before the wedding. A pet smell can really get into your clothing.

Remember that if your special pet is a snake or other type of reptile... some people are afraid of these types of pets.  Be considerate of them.

If your dog is a "biter", consider a muzzle if it is to wander around amongst the guests. You don't want to deal with a dog bite on the wedding day.

Protect your wedding cake and other foods. Dogs love to sniff out these goodies... and cats are able to jump up and walk around in your food.  This is not very appetizing to your guests, even if you sometimes share a plate with your pet.
